Radisson Blu Hotel - East Midlands Airport

Work Type: Hotel
Build Period: 18 Weeks
Customer: Bowmer & Kirkland
Location: East Midlands Airport

Project Brief

The unique design of the 5-storey, 216-bed hotel will incorporate high-quality elements that reflect both the locality and significance as a gateway to the region, including a courtyard that induces references to the nearby National Forest with its timber features.

Bell and Webster’s Solution

This 4-star Hotel also incorporates a number of Sustainable Construction Techniques to deliver a BREEAM Excellent facility. Penny Coates, Managing Director, East Midlands Airport said: "This exciting development is a major boost for the region. The airport is very proud of the high quality hotel and we’re extremely pleased that it will fit with our sustainability ambitions.” Located at the end of East midlands International Airport Runway created its own set of unique problems with ATC limiting operating height of the working crane and with the usual windy conditions a knock on effect was given with lifting operations of the crane. Late 2010, Britain experienced its coldest winter in more than 40 years and whilst adhering to the building regulations this delayed the construction process. Steve Chambers, regional director, of Bowmer and Kirkland, said: "Having endured one of the coldest winters in living memory we are somewhat relieved to have reached this milestone. Everyone working on the site is focused on delivering a quality project that we are all proud to be associated with." Some discrepancies were identified with regards to the design between steelwork and concrete; all design issues with regard to the interface between steelwork and concrete in the staircase areas were resolved with consultation and cooperation between both parties.

Key Issues

  • Problems with Air Traffic Control limiting the operation height of the crane.
  • Weather considerations restricting lifting operations of the crane used during the  construction.
  • Weather restrictions due to snow, winter 2010
